This old Datsun 510 Wagon popped up for sale not too far from me this week for a pretty good price. I emailed the owner and will be going to look at it Saturday morning. I hope it looks worse in person because I already have a couple of project cars and a DD... I really don't have the space/time/money for another project. Convince me not to buy it! lol

looks like not too much of a project. Buy, drive, enjoy...unless it is hiding something

You shouldn't buy it because... erhm... It wouldn't be any fun to drive... No wait, that's not true.

... It won't stand out in a crowd? Nope, that's not it either.

... I think you actually should buy it!

It doesn't look like a project to me unless the floorboards are gone.

Finish what you've already started and leave this car alone.

It's a project because if I buy it I know I'll be doing suspension and brake work to it to make it handle and stop better... and then probably ditching that boat anchor L16 motor for an SR20DET or something along those lines.

I've got an E30 track car and a 1983 320i that I am about to start working on. My DD is a 740 turbo.

Well, one way to look at it then is as a longer term project since it probably runs and drives just fine as it is. It doesn't have to be a money pit right away if you can restrain yourself.

My lack of a garage or reasonably sized backyard is the only thing that keeps me from having projects stacked.

Sounds like you need American Muscle, not Datsun Wagon.

You may have come to the wrong place to be convinced not to buy so awesome. But I'll tell you know to do it, anyway. Why?

Someday.... but for now I enjoy driving cheap light weight nimble cars.

If I could restrain my self I wouldn't be going to look at the car in the first place lol.

What about a cheap light weight AMERICAN V8!?

I posted a nice 83 Mercury Capri yesterday - only 3100 bucks.

DD this instead of your heavy slow Ikea wagon.

These old Japanese cars wouldn't last too many Canadian winters... that's why there's not too many of them here in the rust belt.

My 740 isn't a wagon, but other than the open diff, it's quite a good winter car. Comfy, heated seats, plenty of oppo... and built in Canada!

I own a 720 pickup and a Ram 50 (Mitsubishi Mighty Max) in Wisconsin so I am intimately familiar with how corrosion prone grorious Nippon sheet metal is. So make this a track car and sell the current one. Everyone and their mom tracks BMWs, how many folks track Datsun wagons?

I would love a Datsun like this. Reminds me of my first car, except mine was green. Same hubcaps, too. I am lusting hard on this.

But, please, if you do buy it, don't molest it. Too many Dimes are getting molested, and not in a good way.

Noooooo! If i hadnt just bought a new car I'd beg to buy that one. I could probably find it on Kijiji if I looked, couldn't I?

/not to self, DON'T browse Kijiji for Datsuns later, I shouldn't spend more money.

Dropped suspension, big turbo, hacked dashboard, Prelude seats (though they are pretty comfy). This appears to be mostly a survivor - seats notwithstanding - and there really aren't a lot of nice stockers around anymore.

I'd definitely be lowering it along with a rim and tire upgrade. Not "stanced" low, I'm not into that, but enough to give it a sportier look and feel. Something comfortable to DD yet planted and eager to eat up the twisties. In terms of power plant, I'd drive the stock lump for a while and enjoy it for what it is, but if I didn't see a reason to keep it stock (i.e. price of clean stock versions of these cars rapidly increasing) I'd likely be upgrading it to something a bit more potent just to make it more fun to drive. I usually keep interiors stock, with an exception for a classic sports steering wheel as long as it suits the car.
